DEBBIE GOOCH rad rts
Seeing the joy in the childrens faces when learning to dance is simply the most rewarding experience of teaching. To help facilitate young talent with knowledge I have is incredibly humbling.
Born into a family with solid foundations in the arts and fourth generation dancer, progressing to dance teaching was natural. As a child I studied Classical Ballet to Advanced, Modern Dance to Solo Seal, Tap, and Classical Piano to Grade 8 Trinity College. From young I performed on stage via Competitions, Musical Theatre Productions and Piano Recitals.
In my teenage years I began teaching in my Mums school (Prue Gooch School of Dance), then continued by attending the NZ School of Dance Teacher Training Program for 3 years in Wellington. During the time at NZSD I studied Baroque Dance and received the Dorothy Daniels Scholarship to study further at Stanford University (USA) with Wendy Hilton (Julliard, NY). Also in Wellington, I trained gymnasts with ballet technique and choreographed gymnastic routines at national level.
After returning to Tauranga to teach at the Dance Education Centre in 1994, I began working with many students who are now making their contribution to the dance world. I have choreographed and performed in Musical Theatre Shows for over 12 years and gained the RAD teaching diploma, Licentiate BBO, and Associate ISTD in National Character. My family of 2 children, both who have danced, studied music and singing..
There have been many highlights. Students accepted into prestigious full time schools, students winning at high level national and international competitions, each stage production we create and when a child struggling with a movement finally gets it. I am proud of those students who have successfully continued into the profession as dancers, choreographers, teachers and directors. Not to forget all of those students who have achieved their pathway into further study and careers having used their dance training to better themselves.
It is great to work with my Mum Prue, who has been there from the start and without her I wouldn’t be doing what I do. It’s a wonderful family feel we have at DEC and now having ex-students as teaching staff is heart-warming. It is a joy to see the next generation of children coming through the doors and beginning the steps of their futures.
